Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the wave propagation in a non-homogenous semiconducting medium through the photothermal process using the fractional order photo-thermoelastic without neglecting the coupling between the plasma and thermoelastic waves that photogenerated through traction free and loaded thermally by exponentially decaying pulse boundary heat flux.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical solutions in the transformed domain by the eigenvalue approach were observed through the transform techniques of Laplace.

Findings

Silicon-like semiconductor was used to achieve the numerical computations.

Originality/value

Some comparisons are shown in the figures to estimate the effects of the fractional order and non-homogeneous parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

Kaizen is an umbrella concept for a management philosophy based on a set of principles and values with different tools and techniques that form part of Company-Wide Quality Control. The purpose of this study to explore the empirical evidence of Kaizen philosophy practice and its effect on Ethiopian manufacturing industries, chemical companies in particular.

Design/methodology/approach

After the literature review, an exploratory empirical research, supported on a company observation, was adopted. The eight companies visit giveaway collecting annual technical reports and Kaizen award presentations. The review structure encompassed four major approaches. The first approach is conducting extensive literature review and adopting methodologies. The second approach is examining secondary data and developing SWOT analysis. The third is exploring Kaizen practices, developing framework, identifying drivers and barriers using charts, diagrams and graphs. The final approach is proposing way forward and implications based on the findings from the investigative study to emphasize the link between Kaizen practice and its effect on manufacturing industries’ performance.

Findings

The findings indicate practice of Kaizen brought in achieving monetary, nonmonetary and qualitative results. However, results vary from company to company. The average attained improvements of productivity, production volume, machine productivity and sales volume are 2.77%, 28.69%, 10.14% and 31.53% respectively. Moreover, a total of 71,932,472.19 ETB is saved by following structured framework and practice of social and technical factors. However, companies could not sustain Kaizen activities and unable to maintain the attained substantial improvements due to less effort made on some of the Kaizen practices identified as barriers on the cause and effect diagram of this exploratory study.

Research limitations/implications:

A sample size of eight companies is not adequate to generalize key findings of this study. This will be put right by carrying out further surveys in the future using questionnaire and semistructured interviews.

Practical implications

The findings of this study underlined that practice of Kaizen philosophy on chemical companies supported by structured implementation framework, full practice of drivers, eradicating barriers, sustaining practices and maintaining improvements enable in enhancing chemical companies performance through achieving quantitative (monetary and nonmonetary) and qualitative results.

Originality/value

Although there are a number of studies published on Kaizen, currently it is found that there is lack of literature on practice and effect of Kaizen philosophy. Based on this exploratory study and assessment, the framework and circumstance of Kaizen philosophy practices are providing valuable insights for chemical companies, other manufacturing industries and organizations, which will be on board on this voyage including Ethiopian Kaizen Institute, practitioners and academicians.

Abstract

The thermal diffusivity of thick film NTC layers based on a metal oxide powder mixture was measured at room temperature by the photoacoustic (PA) technique. The powder mixture was composed of MnO (60 percent), CoO (32 percent) and Fe2O3 (8 percent), which were ball milled to nanometer particle size. NTC layers of different thicknesses were made by sequentional screen‐printing followed by drying and co‐firing at 850, 900 and 1,000°C in a hybrid conveyor furnace. The experimental PA phase and amplitude diagrams were numerically analyzed and the thermal diffusivity and electron transport parameters were calculated. An increase of thermal diffusivity with sintering temperature was observed. The fractal structure model was in agreement with the experimental data for modulation frequencies in which the sample behaved as thermally thick.

Abstract

A new model for thick film resistor calculation accounts for the physical effects which make variations in local sheet resistivity and local volume resistivity: geometry and terminal diffusion effects. Taking the criterion of homogeneity in the observations of local resistivity, a resistor is transformed geometrically and electrically into equivalent modular parts. Comparing the resistor transformed by equivalent geometrical and electrical transformation (EGET) with an ideal resistor a new semi‐empirical formula for thick film resistor calculation was evaluated. This model takes into account the technological process which makes possible more accurate resistor projection compared with other models.

Abstract

The fact that per capita energy consumption in non-OECD (The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries makes up only 30% of average consumption in OECD countries, as well as the fact that highly efficient technologies and equipment have been available for many years in developed countries where energy efficiency is one of the top priorities, has often been cited as an argument in favour of the claim that energy efficiency is relevant only for highly developed countries. In this chapter, we attempt to establish if and why this opinion is wrong in the case of Western Balkans (WB6). Evident lack of interest in this area which we identified through analysis of available literature was an important motive for the consideration of the issue of energy efficiency in WB6 countries.

Analysing the basic macroeconomic and energy indicators for WB6 countries and their comparison with indicators for European Union (EU) member countries, we found that all countries have the potential benefit from implementation of energy efficiency and conservation projects. Besides the possible energy savings, wider socio-economic benefits in WB6 countries include harmonization with EU regulations, reduced dependence on import and thus reduced risk of price shocks and potential reduction of trade deficit, creation of jobs, health benefits, better productivity and improved competitiveness.

However, realizing the full potential of energy efficiency requires removal of many financial, institutional, technical and behavioural barriers, whereby WB6 countries can use the help of institutions which provide technical assistance and funds, beside measures which fall under jurisdiction of governments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the transient effects in a functionally graded photo-thermoelastic (TE) medium with gravity and rotation by considering two generalised TE theories: Lord–Shulman (LS) and Green–Lindsay (GL). The governing equations are derived in rectangular Cartesian coordinates for a two dimensional problem.

Design/methodology/approach

All the physical properties of the semiconductor are supposed to vary exponentially with distance. The analytical solution is procured by employing normal mode technique on the resulting non-dimensional coupled field equations with appropriate boundary conditions.

Findings

For the mechanically loaded thermally insulated surface, normal displacement, stress components, temperature distribution and carrier density are calculated numerically with the help of MATLAB software for a silicon semiconductor and displayed graphically. Some particular cases of interest have also been deduced from the present results.

Originality/value

The effects of rotation and non-homogeneity on the different physical fields are investigated on the basis of analytical and numerical results. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by GL theory in the presence and absence of gravity for different values of time. Comparisons are also made between the three theories in the presence of rotation, gravity and in-homogeneity. Such problems are very important in many dynamical systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish a two-dimensional model of Green–Lindsay theory for micropolar magneto-thermoelastic medium to study the photothermal effect. The model is used to study the coupling between elastic waves and plasma waves generated due to thermal changes in a micropolar elastic medium.

Design/methodology/approach

Normal mode analysis is used to obtain the analytical solutions of the governing equations.

Findings

Effects of magnetic field, micropolarity, photothermal and time are highlighted on various physical fields such as stresses, temperature, displacement and carrier density. The above physical fields also conform to the boundary conditions. It is further observed that all the physical quantities become zero outside some bounded region of space, thus confirming the notion of generalized theory of thermoelasticity.

Originality/value

The values of physical fields are computed numerically using MATLAB software considering material constants for silicon. Furthermore, the effects are depicted graphically and analyzed accordingly. The study is valuable for the analysis of thermoelastic problems involving magnetic field, micropolarity and elastic deformations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study photothermal excitation process in an initially stressed semi-infinite double porous thermoelastic semiconductor with voids subjected to Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory under the fractional order triple-phase-lag thermoelasticity theory. The considered substrate is governed by the mechanical and thermal loads at the free surface.

Design/methodology/approach

The normal mode technique is used to carry out the investigation of photothermal transportation. By virtue of the MATHEMATICA software, each distribution is exhibited graphically.

Findings

The expressions of the displacements, temperature, volume fractions of both kinds of voids, carrier density and stresses are determined analytically. With the help of the numerical data for silicon (Si) material, graphical implementations are presented on the basis of initial stress, fractional order, nonlocality and thermoelectric coupling parameters.

Originality/value

The present study fabricates the association of Eringen’s nonlocal theory and the stress analysis in a semiconducting double porous thermoelastic material with voids, which significantly implies the originality of the conducted work.

Abstract

Destination brand personality has been considered as an emotional relationship between a branded destination and its visitors (Ekinci, 2003). Previous studies exclusively focused on the match between visitor’s personality and destination personality (Sirgy & Su, 2000; Usakli & Baloglu, 2011). However, there is a lack of investigation centered on tourism industry professionals (TIPs). This chapter is to assess the congruity between TIPs’ self-assessed personality, their perceived brand personality of Macau as a destination as well as the brand personality of their tourism/hospitality-related organizations. Findings of this study reveal that TIPs’ perceived Big Five dimensions of self, Macau, and organization tend to match with each other in certain dimensions. Neither their own nor their organizations’ Big Five dimensions “Openness” and “Conscientiousness” matches their perceived brand personality of Macau. This chapter provides empirical evidence which may suggest to Macau policy makers to further develop branding strategies through strengthening its brand personalities.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of internal stickiness (IS) on the success of projects through the perception of managers involved in projects.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate the effects of internal stickiness (IS) on the success of projects through the perception of managers involved in projects.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected 253 valid responses from project managers, using a validated IS scale and project success scale. The results were analyzed using nonparametric correlation due to the nature of the data.

Findings

The dimensions of success are interrelated, and IS, considering the barriers to knowledge transfer, is negatively related to all of these dimensions. This confirms the importance of the behavior of the individual and the team, rather than only formal processes to avoid IS and positively impact the success of projects.

Practical implications

The tacit and behavioral component of knowledge management needs to be further explored in practice. Project management activities need to pay greater attention to knowledge development, knowledge transfer and learning between those involved in the project and within a company.

Originality/value

The study provides a better understanding of knowledge transfer barriers, represented by the IS construct, to the success of projects. The success of projects depends on the relationship with teams that include members of organizational sectors not related to the existence of permanent project management teams. The relationship contributes to the successful transfer of knowledge between the recipient and the source of knowledge according to the recipient's needs.
